Blake felt uncomfortable driving to Caitlin’s house, but he didn’t want to talk over the phone. He’d driven around aimlessly for the past thirty minutes to make sure he wasn’t being followed, and was now getting close to her address according to the GPS.

Straining to see in the darkness, he distinguished an opening for a driveway, and then saw her black Jeep. After a quick survey of the layout of the property, he pulled his truck in behind a shed and a hedgerow of trees so it couldn’t be seen from the road.

The building appeared to be a small tenant house, probably predating the Civil War, but it was in pristine condition and neatly kept. He walked up three steps to the porch and tapped twice on the door.

After just a few moments, he heard the doorknob turning. It concerned him that the door had apparently been unlocked—and that she didn’t check to see who was there before swinging it open.

Caitlin stood in the threshold bathed in the warm light of the house, gazing straight ahead with the dull stare of someone who has been through too much. She didn’t seem surprised to see him, but then again she made no effort to greet him or ask him in. Blake stood there trying to think of something to say when she stepped into his arms, sobbing.

Gently nudging her into the house, Blake closed the door behind them. Again, he didn’t know what to say or how to console her, causing him to wonder if he should have come at all. He didn’t have much experience with crying women, and wasn’t all that interested in gaining that expertise. This type of situation made him uncomfortable.

“I’m like poison,” she said in between sobs. “Killing everyone around me.”

“It’s not your fault, Cait.”

With her arms wrapped around him tightly and her cheek pressed against his chest, he could feel her body trembling with emotion. Except for the few tears he had seen one time in the bar, she had always appeared strong and in control. It was alarming to find her so distraught and emotional.

“Why don’t you sit down?” He helped her over to the kitchen table and pulled out a chair.

Caitlin lowered herself into the seat and put her head in her arms on the table. “What happened?” she murmured in a low, tormented voice.

Blake eased into a chair beside her and let out his breath. “Officially? Hit and run.” He saw her head start moving back and forth as a low moan escaped her. “They’re searching for vehicles with damage.” He waited, but she made no effort to speak. “One person thought they saw a black SUV-type vehicle leaving at a high rate of speed.”

“Did you know? Who she was?” Her voice was whispered and distraught.

“She was wearing a State Department ID. From the look on your face, I figured it was someone you knew.”

She didn’t move or reply, so Blake reached out and gave her arm a gentle squeeze. “You okay? You know this could just be another terrible coincidence.
