Blake felt uncomfortable driving to Caitlinâs house, but he didnât want to talk over the phone. Heâd driven around aimlessly for the past thirty minutes to make sure he wasnât being followed, and was now getting close to her address according to the GPS.
Straining to see in the darkness, he distinguished an opening for a driveway, and then saw her black Jeep. After a quick survey of the layout of the property, he pulled his truck in behind a shed and a hedgerow of trees so it couldnât be seen from the road.
The building appeared to be a small tenant house, probably predating the Civil War, but it was in pristine condition and neatly kept. He walked up three steps to the porch and tapped twice on the door.
After just a few moments, he heard the doorknob turning. It concerned him that the door had apparently been unlockedâand that she didnât check to see who was there before swinging it open.
Caitlin stood in the threshold bathed in the warm light of the house, gazing straight ahead with the dull stare of someone who has been through too much. She didnât seem surprised to see him, but then again she made no effort to greet him or ask him in. Blake stood there trying to think of something to say when she stepped into his arms, sobbing.
Gently nudging her into the house, Blake closed the door behind them. Again, he didnât know what to say or how to console her, causing him to wonder if he should have come at all. He didnât have much experience with crying women, and wasnât all that interested in gaining that expertise. This type of situation made him uncomfortable.
âIâm like poison,â she said in between sobs. âKilling everyone around me.â
âItâs not your fault, Cait.â
With her arms wrapped around him tightly and her cheek pressed against his chest, he could feel her body trembling with emotion. Except for the few tears he had seen one time in the bar, she had always appeared strong and in control. It was alarming to find her so distraught and emotional.
âWhy donât you sit down?â He helped her over to the kitchen table and pulled out a chair.
Caitlin lowered herself into the seat and put her head in her arms on the table. âWhat happened?â she murmured in a low, tormented voice.
Blake eased into a chair beside her and let out his breath. âOfficially? Hit and run.â He saw her head start moving back and forth as a low moan escaped her. âTheyâre searching for vehicles with damage.â He waited, but she made no effort to speak. âOne person thought they saw a black SUV-type vehicle leaving at a high rate of speed.â
âDid you know? Who she was?â Her voice was whispered and distraught.
âShe was wearing a State Department ID. From the look on your face, I figured it was someone you knew.â
She didnât move or reply, so Blake reached out and gave her arm a gentle squeeze. âYou okay? You know this could just be another terrible coincidence.
